What is Clotrimazole?
Clotrimazole is a synthetic imidazole derivative with a broad spectrum
antifungal acitivity that is used for the treatment of dermal infections caused
by various species of pathogenic dermatophytes, yeasts, and Malassezia furfur
and also some gram positive bacteria specially staphylococci, Trichomonas.
What are the indications?
1) The local treatment of
vaginal & vulval candidiasis
2) For the fungal infection in otitis externa
3) Broadly effective in the fungal skin infections.
4) In some gram positive bacteria infection of the skin and nails
5) Fungal infection including tenia, paronychia, intertrigo.
6) The treatment of dermatomycoses due to molds and other fungi.
The above dermatomycosis include
interdigital mycosis (e.g. athletes foot), mycosis in skin folds, candida
balanitis, pityriasis versicolor, erythrasma.
What is the procedure of application?
The affected areas of the body have to wash with soap and water finally dry
thoroughly. Then sufficient Cloderm cream gently massages into the affected area
and surrounding skin twice in a day in the morning as well as in the evening.
This cream should be applied for one month or for at least two weeks after the
disappearance of all signs of infection. If perfect result does not come within
this period, consult with physician. For the best results, continue the
treatment as direction.
What are the duration of treatment?
Dermatomycoses 3-4 weeks
Candida vulvitis and candida balanitis 1-2 weeks
In fungal infection of the feet, to prevent relapses, treatment should be
continued for about 2 weeks beyond the disappearance of all signs of disease.
What are the contraindications?
It is contraindicated in pregnancy and lactating mother
What are the side-effects?
Cloderm cream is well tolerated, even of the hypersensitive skin. But local
burning or stinging, skin irritation, rashes are appeared in rare cases.
What are the drug interactions?
Clotrimazole may antagonise polyene antibiotics
