Presentation:
Costin 500: Each tablet
contains Calcium Carbonate 1250 mg USP equivalent to 500 mg elemental
Calcium.
Costin 250: Each
chewable tablet contains Calcium Carbonate 625 mg USP equivalent to 250 mg
elemental Calcium
Indications and Uses:
Calcium supplementaltionn is
required in
-
Children and adolescents at
time of rapid growth;
-
Pregnancy and laction;
-
Inadequate intake of calcium
in diet due to malnutrition;
-
Preventionand treatment of
osteoporosis;
-
Disorders of osteogenesis and
tooth formation;
-
Latent tetany.
Dosage and Administration:
Adult and adolescents:
500-1500 mg daily according to requirements as directed by the physician;
Children: 250-1000 mg
daily according to requirements as directed by the physician. A large dose
should not be taken unless recommended by the physician
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to any
components of this preparation, Hypercalcemia, Hyper-parathyroidism, Zollinger-Ellison
Syndrome, Concomitant Digoxin therapy, Severy hypercalciuria, Severe renal
insufficiency, Nephrolithiasis.
Side Effects:
Mild gastrointestinal
disturbances e.g. flatulence, abdominal pain, constipation may occur.
Hypercalcaemias and alkalosis are rarely produced with large doses.
Use in pregnancy & lactation:
There is no cotraindication t
use of Calcium Carbonate in pregnancy and in lactating mother.
Drug interaction:
Oral calcium can reduce
absorption of tetracycline and fluoride preparations and an interval of at
least 3 hours should therefore be allowed betweedn ingestion of these
medicaions. Vitamin Dincreases absorption of calcium. The intestinal uptake of
Calcium may be reduced by concomitant ingestion of certain food. (e.g.
spinach, milk and milk products).

Costin 500: Each box
contains 10 X 10's tablets in blister strips.
Costin 250:Each box contains 10 X 10's chewable tablets in blister
strips.
