Procyclidine hydrochloride USP
Description:
Extranil (Procyclidine
hydrochloride) is a synthetic antimuscarinic antiparkinsonian agent. It has been
shown to be useful for the treatment of parkinsonism including post
encephalitic, arteriosclerotic and idiopathic types. Extranil successfully
relieves the symptoms of extrapyramidal dysfunction (e.g. Dystonia, Akathisia &
Dyskinesia) which accompany the therapy of mental disorder with phenothiazine or
other drugs.
Presentation :
Each tablet contains Procyclidine
hydrochloride USP 5 mg.
Indication:
All forms of Parkinson's disease
e.g.
Extrapyramidal symptoms e.g.
-
pseudo-parkinsonism
-
acute dystonic reactions
-
akathisia
induced by neuroleptic drugs such
as phenothiazine derivatives.
Dosage and Administration:
Parkinsonism: Initially 2.5 mg 3
times daily, increasing by 2.5-5 mg daily at intervals of 2 or 3 days until the
optimum clinical response is achieved. The usual maximum dose is 30 mg daily in
divided doses and may be increased upto 60 mg daily in divided doses.
Drug induced extrapyramidal
symptom: Initially 2.5 mg 3 times daily. The dosage being increased by 2.5 mg
per day as needed and tolerated. Maximum 20 mg daily can be given.
Contraindications:
Tradive dyskinesia and the
patients those are hypersensitive to procyclidine.
Precaution:
It should be given with caution
in children & geriatric patients. It is advisable to be cautious in giving
Extranil to patients with diarrhoea and cardiovascular diseeases, glaucoma,
urinary retention, hepatic or renal impairment.
In Pregnancy and Lactation:
No data is advisable on the safe
use of this drug in pregnancy and lactation.
Side Effects:
Dryness of mouth, blurring of
vision, giddiness, gastro-intestinal disturbances (nausea, vomiting, epigastria,
distress, constipation), allergic reaction (e.g. rash) or muscular weakness may
occasionally occur. High doses may cause vertigo and possible confusion and
hallucination, Side effects may usually be minimized by adjustment of dosage and
administration after meal.
Drug Interaction:
Phenothiazines, anticonvulsants,
levodopa, ketoconazole, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, adsorbent antidiarrhoeals,
alcohol, anticholinergic drugs.
Storage condition:
Keep in a cool and dry place,
protected from light.
Commercial pack:
Each box contains 10 blister
strips of 10 tablets.
