Trade Name: MUCOLEX D/S
Generic Name:
Carbocisteine
Presentation :
Mucolex capsule 375 mg
Mucolex suspension 100 ml.
Mucolytics :
Mucolytics are the agents that facilitate expectoration by reducing sputum
viscosity. Regular use of oral mucolytics may be of some benefit in patients
with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease who suffer from exacerbations. Steam
inhalation with postural drainage is good expectorant therapy in bronchiectasis
and in some cases of chronic bronchitis.
Available Mucolytics :
Carbocisteine, Bromhexine, Methyl Carbocisteine.
Mechanism of Action :
Carbocisteine is a derivative of acetylcysteine, it is blocked thiol group. Its
major action is on the metabolism of mucus producing cells. The mucus produced
under the influence of carbocisteine, has an increased sialomucin content.
Sialomucins influence the rheological properties of mucus and may also, through
inhibition of kinins, reduce or prevent bronchial inflammation and bronchospasm.
Indications :
Carbocisteine is indicated especially for chronic respiratory conditions like
bronchitis, bronchial obstruction as in asthma, bronchiectasis, upper
respiratory tract congestion, glue ear, otitis media, sinusitis, and
rhinopharyngitis.

improvement of cough four days ahead of Bromhexine.
-
Carbocisteine inhibited or
improved all SO2-induced changes while Bromhexine showed no such effect.
Superiority from other Mucolytic
1. Mucolex dose not cause
drowsiness or dependence.
2. There is no precautionary measure for asthma patients.
