: Cephradine

Mode of action :
Peptidoglycon is the building block of bacterial cell wall. Velogen inhibits the synthesis of peptidoglycon by blocking Peptidoglycon synthetase enzyme. So bacterial cell wall formation is inhibited. Wihout cell wall bacteria cannot survive.

Uses : Infections due to sensitive gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, surgical prophylaxis.

Dosage and administration :

  • Adult : 2-4 gm daily in 4 equally divided doses or as advised by the physician. In severe cases upto 8 gm/day.

  • Children : 50-100 mg/kg/day in 4 divided doses. Severe infections : 200-300 mg/kg/day.

Contraindication : In hypersensitivity to Cephradine.

Uses in pregnancy and Lactation : It crosses the placenta, although studies in human have not been done, studies in animal have not shown that it causes adverse effects on the foetus. It is excreted in the breast milk usually in low concentrations. Although problems in human have not been documented, risk-benefit must be considered.
