a) What is Nufex?
Nufex (Cephalexin) is a first generation Cephalosporin antibiotic.
b) What are the presentations
of Nufex preparation?
Nufex D/S : Each bottle contains dry powder for 100ml syrup.
After reconstitution, each 5ml Nufex syrup contains 125 mg Cephalexin BP.
Nufex 500 : Each Nufex capsule contains Cephalexin BP 500 mg as Cephalexin
monohydrate BP.
c) Describe the mechanism of
action of Nufex.
Nufex inhibits the synthesis of bacterial cell wall by blocking Peptidoglycon
synthetase enzyme. Whithout cell wall bacteria cannot survive. As cell wall
synthesis is inhibited by Nufex, so bacteria die.
d) What are the indications of
Nufex?
Nufex (Cephalexin) is active against wide range of gram-positive and
gram-negative bacteria including penicillinase producing staphylococci.
Urinary tract infections : Acute and chronic nephritis, cystitis, urethritis &
prostatitis, recurrent urinary tract infection.
Skin and soft tissue infections : Caused by staphylococci, and/or streptococci.
Ear, Nose and Throat infections : Otitis media, mastoiditis, sinusitis,
follicular tonsilitis and pharyngitis.
Bone infections : Caused by staphylococci and/or P. mirabilitis.
e) What are the dosage of
Nufex?
Adult : 2-4 tsp 6 hrly. In severity 6-12 tsp daily or as directed by physician.
One to two capsules 6 hourly. In case of severity the dose can be increased up
to 3 to 6 gm daily or as advised by the physician.
Children : The dosage
range is 25-100 mg/kg/day in divided doses to a maximum of 4 gm daily or as
advised by the physician.
