PRESCRIBING INFORMATION
Presentation
Elocan Ointment: Each gram ointment contains Mometasone Furoate USP 1 mg.
Pharmacodynamic Properties
Like other corticosteroids, Mometasone Furoate has anti-inflammatory, antipruritic and vesoconstrictive properties. The mechanism of the anti-inflammatory activity of topical steroids, in general, is unclear. However corticosteroids are thought to act by the induction of phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins, collectively called lipocortins. It is postulated that these proteins control the biosynthesis of potent mediators of inflammation such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes by inhibiting the release of their common precursor arachidonic acid. Arachidonic acid is release from the membrane phospholipids by phospholipase A2.

It is not known whether topical administration of corticosteroid could result in sufficient systemic absorption to produce detectible quantities in human milk. Because many drugs are excreted in human milk, caution should be exercised when Elocan ointment is applied to a nursing mother.
