in appearance and function. Cancer occurs when cells become abnormal and divide
without control or order. Such abnormal cells can form a mass or tumor.
What is breast cancer?
Breast cancer is cancer that affects the breast. The vast majority of breast
cancer occurs in women, although men can develop breast cancer too.
Status of breast cancer
Breast cancer can be benign or malignant. A breast cancer is considered benign
if it is limited to a few cell layers and does not invade surrounding tissues or
organs. If the tumor spreads to surrounding tissues or organs, it is considered
malignant, or cancerous.
Type of Breast cancer
There are several types of breast cancer. The most common is ductal
carcinoma-begins in the lining of the milk ducts of breast. Another type,
lobular carcinoma-begins in the lobules where breast milk is produced.
Cause of breast cancer
Breast cell contain a variety of genes that normally work cooperatively with a
woman's natural hormones, diet, and environment to keep her breast healthy.
Certain genes routinely keep breast cells from dividing and growing out of
control and forming tumors. When these genes become altered, changes occur and a
cell no longer can grow correctly.
